The sound of Grief and gratitude. Rasha Jay’s Spine-Chilling new single “Backbone”.

Rasha Jay Press-Release

At her musical essence, New Jersey singer-songwriter Rasha Jay encapsulates cross-genre soul-rock sentiments, setting her aside from the pack. Rasha Jay is due to release her latest and more emotive single, ‘Backbone’ on May 28th. Written during Feb 2020, just before a year like no other, Rasha describes the inspiration behind the newest single:

“I wrote this song in February 2020, ahead of a tumultuous year that we didn’t expect here in the US or in the world. I wrote it after hearing about my last uncle passing away on January 1st. I came home and went right to my keyboard and just started talking, then singing, then crying…and what came out of that was not just sadness and grief, but gratitude. My aunt passed away 30 days after him. Again, grief with gratitude. I felt honored to know them, to love them. That’s what Backbone is about–the visuals, the feelings, the notion of recognizing you are what you are because of a connection”.

Rasha Jay, 2021/Press-Release

The song itself is powerful and poignant, with the achingly soulful vocals of Rasha layered within the trip-hop, Portishead-Esque instrumental. The guitar’s melody echoes throughout, forcing your head to bop to the beat, luring you into forgetting the pain behind the lyricism. ‘Backbone’ is stripped down, allowing us to focus on only Rasha Jay’s stunning vocals, which were Rasha’s first vocal take. ‘Backbone’ is a raw and honest track that feels in-depth compared to the superficiality of some pop songs; it feels as if we are reading a diary entry from Rasha, able to empathise with Rasha’s trauma while simultaneously enjoying the musicalisation of the unrestrained vehemence.

Rasha Jay has grown up in the small town of Owings, Maryland, and is exemplary that no matter who you are or where you are from, you can and should make music for self-expression. ‘Backbone’ is out on all streaming platforms on May 28th, and you can hear and see more of Rasha Jay through her socials which are linked below.

Devi Charmian: Folk Rocker with a unique name

When you know something is good, you know it’s good. The minute we heard Charmian Devi’s new music we just knew it was special and at this present time, whilst the world is falling apart, her music allows you to escape all the troubles of the world. But first, why not get to know more about Chairmian Devi and afterwards you’ll have the opportunity to indulge her music.

“Charmian Devi has a unique gift for arrangements and composition. Vocals are sweet and sultry. She has talent and her music a sultry and fresh effort.”Michele McManmon, The LA Indie Music Examiner.

“Such a Disgrace’ is the exact opposite with her song. It’s a groovy soul that makes your go out to her.” IndieDial.com

Folk- rock trooper, Chairmian Devi has already written two of this year’s most infectious and seething rock songs and she also assembled a band featuring some of rock’s most revered names;  guitarist Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group); Tony Garnier (Bob Dylan’s bass player since 1989; Tom Waits; Paul Simon) and Sonic Youth drummer, Steve Shelley, not to mention the talented work of Marc Urselli behind the production desk (six-times nominated and three-times Grammy award winner: Lou Reed; Mike Patton; Keith Richards; ZZ Top and many more!) Proving her standing among these rock legends, Chairmian Devi is your new rock hero!

Watch the promo video for No Peace here:

…and the lyric video for Radio of None here:

Based in Canada, Chairmian Devi has spent her life as a musician, from melodic garage bands through to lead singer and songwriter for 90s punk band, Wretch Ethyl who became Canada’s most talk-about bands, opening for the likes of Seattle grunge legends, 7 Year Bitch and punk icons, Nomeansno. Their demise after four fraught years sadly coincided with the tragic death of her husband – it was from the burning embers of this dark and harrowing time that Charmian Devi relocated to London for two years to rebuild her life. Still haunted by her turbulent past, she returned to Canada and a new Charmian emerged, a songwriter and musician who was truly able to crystallise her experiences and express them through her music.

“I really enjoyed recording with Charmian Devi…her songs remind me of bands like the Velvet Underground, raw intuitive and in-tune with the times.” Bassist, Tony Garnier

Dedicated to a life in music and resolutely opposed to authoritarian regimes and dogma, Charmian is the embodiment of everything rock n roll stands for: truth; revolution and unyielding artistry. Her latest single, Radio of None is available on 8th April.

“I’ve really enjoyed producing Charmian because there are fewer and fewer artists today that play inspired & raw folk/rock music and are not trying to polish everything to sound more commercial. Her music speaks the truth and she puts all of herself into her songs. That’s also why I wanted to use musicians that are comfortable in an environment of spontaneous music that’s rough around the edges but carries a meaning and an attitude. Patti Smith, Bob Dylan and Sonic Youth are all raw and unapologetic and make great rock and/or folk music with powerful lyrics and meanings, so choosing Lenny, Tony and Steve was an obvious choice because that is exactly what Charmian does too!” Three-times Grammy Award-winning producer, Marc Urselli

Nave Blues, A Powerhouse Of Rock And Blues Fusion

With 2018 in official full-swing, you can be sure that there is no shortage of talent to bless yourself with. Blues Rock mixed with hauntingly dissonant melodies and deep, roaring sounds which rip through the fabric of normality, Nave Blues are genuinely set for a journey like no other.

With a mix of different elements that make Nave Blues unique, include song writing techniques, presence/stage performance and finally geographical relevance. Based in Norway, the boys that provide the blues came together with an intention to explore new avenues in the blues rock world that have yet to be explored.

Lead singer Nave Pundik, lead and only harmonica player in the band fronts this visually intriguing ensemble. The groups mood is reminiscent to bands such as ‘Type O Negative’, but the music is another story, dragging major influence from the likes of ‘Led Zeppelin’ and ‘Supertramp’.

With the brand new album ‘The NaveBlues’ on the horizon, be sure to not to miss the Nave Blues.

Cholesterol Jones Takes the Fool by the Horns

Even though, by any stretch of the imagination, Satan’s in Heaven isn’t a full-on metal mosh-a-thon, we didn’t think twice about featuring it. The slightly gospel mantra that runs hypnotically throughout feels slightly like the brainwashing chants of a clandestine cult. Though it feels on the surface like a jolly sing-a-long ditty, there’s a strange melancholia that clings to the song – perfectly apt for a track which in the true traditions of satire takes aim at a subject and doesn’t let go. The subject is, naturally, His Grace Donald Trump and the failings of a democratic system which facilitated his rise to power. The false promise of the melody and bitter undercurrent mean the overall effect is far more satisfactory than someone just shouting abuse at the top of their voice.

Even more excitingly, the rest of the forthcoming EP is well worth a listen too. Bradford Street’s lullaby-like swoon is punctuated by lines like: “You used to have eyes/now it’s all turned black”; stand-out track, River Styx, is achingly sad without being mawkish or overtly self-pitying. He Claimed the Tree of Life feels a little too much like it’s re-treading ground already stomped upon. Nameless Dogs completes the set in appropriately grey-cloud fashion – in fact, the EP concludes at just the right point – there’s the sense that any more would tip the balance into some sort of indie-emo-folk mire. A great introduction though, well worth investigating.

Yeti Love want to take you down their ‘Lonely Road’ with new single

Single impact date set for June 15th

PRimage

Named thanks to enduring love/fear of the vaunted mythical creature, Yeti Love is the musical moniker of songwriters Peter Hamilton and Dave Sears – the folk two who view the genre as this generation’s punk music, able to articulate about issues and press all the right buttons in all the wrong places.

Hamilton is also influenced by his own ancestry, being half Spanish and, at a young age, falling in love with the folk traditions of home town Galicia. Having started out as a drummer before expanding his own musical horizons, his talent for finding good rhythm was informed by this specific branch of celtic roots music. Married to Sears’ intricate, multi-instrumental approach, the result is a hybrid sound unlike any other act on the circuit today.

New single, ‘Lonely Road’, is set for release on June 15th, and you can hear it here.

The pair have labelled their unique combination as ‘alt-rogue-folk-rock’, which is as fitting a description as any. Based in South London, they have been performing and creating together since 2012 and ‘Lonely Road’ is the latest fruit of their labours.

The single will be available from June 15th.

Sandy Kilpatrick due to release single ‘Your Love is a Weapon’ from album ‘The Shaman’s Call’

PRimageAn acoustic-folk singer-songwriter, Sandy Kilpatrick is now Portugal based having been born and raised in Scotland. His new album, ‘The Shaman’s Call’, is the latest stunning release in a career that has grown organically over time, with his sound echoing great songwriters as wide ranging as David Bowie and Damien Rice, while retaining his own unique take on the genre.

Those developing years have been spent surrounded by talents who have made it to the mainstream, such as close friend and New Order guitarist Phil Cunningham. Now Sandy Kilpatrick aims to follow in their footsteps.

Having lived in various parts of the UK before moving to Portugal to be with his family, Sandy Kilpatrick’s particular brand of accessible folk music has a well-travelled feel to it. Inspired by a wide ranging exploration of all of life’s experience as seen through Sandy Kilpatrick’s eyes as a writer, Sandy’s last album ‘Redemption Road’ was notable enough to gain the support of key BBC tastemakers Guy Garvey and Mark Radcliffe. One track was even used by footballer Cristiano Ronaldo on his ‘Best Bits of 2013’ video.

‘The Shaman’s Call’ marks further progression for Sandy Kilpatrick as an artist, guided out of the gate by new single ‘Your Love Is a Weapon’, a song which focuses on the intimacy and solitude of the writer at work: https://soundcloud.com/sandykilpatrick/your-love-is-a-weapon

Like this track, the album as a whole is designed to feel raw, and not hidden behind the smoke and mirrors of big production. The lyrics are intimate and thoughtful, hitting many highs, lows and moments of heartfelt poignancy – many of which listeners will immediately relate to.
